Things that are not happening in Los Altos: Swine flu

May 28, 2009

(This post is a little late, but I wanted to first make sure I had recovered from whatever bug it was that kept me inside all weekend, lest I attract karma’s evil eye).

Los Altans are safe from Mexican Whooping Cough, the Town Crier assured readers earlier this month, once again in embracing its role in explaining to its readers that bad things don’t happen to rich people.  Regular readers will remember that mythical pet illnesses, Black Friday, cyclones and a 7.8 earthquake in China also have not happened in Los Altos.

Not to be outdone, at least not by as much as normally, the Voice attempted its own self-caricature in its swine flu coverage, relying on an indirect source to summarily declare an end to the story.

It seems the average citizen has figured out that the swine flu scare was just that — a scare. It took the CDC somewhat longer to catch on.

It’s often hard to tell when Don is joking.  But if he was, the virus provided the punch line.  Two weeks later, a headline in the Voice read, “Reports of swine flu climb in Santa Clara County.”

This is hilarious. Especially the earthquake in China comment. Although, be careful, lest your loved ones not win anything at the annual chamber of commerce event…though i guess you need to keep your journalistic integrity.
